November Retail Sales Below Expectations at -1.1%

  • U.S. retail sales plummeted in November, falling 1.1% when markets had expected a drop of 0.3%. October's 0.3% gain was revised down to -0.1%, marking the first monthly decline since April.
  • Motor vehicle and parts sales fell 1.7% in November after a flat reading in October.
  • Gas station sales slipped by 2.4% through November following a 0.2% decline in October.
  • Excluding motor vehicle sales, retail sales were down 0.9%. Excluding motor vehicle and gas station sales, retail sales were down 0.8%.
  • Apparel store sales fell significantly by 6.8%, doubling October's 3.4% drop.
  • Restaurant sales fell by 4% in November, likely a result of surging Covid-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths across the nation which have triggered new restrictions for bars and eateries in some places.
  • Meanwhile, grocery store sales picked up in November, rising 1.9% after falling 0.6% in October.
  • Sales of building materials also rose through the month, climbing 1.1%.
