Officials Say Progress Made On Ceasefire Deal Despite Cabinet Row

ISRAEL

Walla News reporting that according to unnamed US and Israeli officials "In recent days, there has been progress in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas on the details of the hostage deal and the cease-fire in Gaza, and the parties have passed through the mediators lists of hostages and prisoners they want to be released,"

  • Walla also report that at the security cabinet meeting on the evening of 29 August, a shouting match erupted between PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on the issue of the prospective deal.
  • According to unnamed officials, Gallat advocated for accepting the current US 'briding proposal' as-is in order to ensure the safe return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Walla says Gallant claimed "if Israel does not [accept] the deal, the significance is much broader than the issue of the hostages, because such a choice could lead to a regional war."
  • However, Netanyahu supposedly late into the night sought a vote on the IDF remaining in the Philadelphi corridor (the frontier between Egypt and Gaza), which would breach the current proposal. Gallant was the sole objector in the vote, saying that remaining in the Philadelphi corridor would give Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar control over the strategic direction of the war. Gallant is quoted as saying "The choice is between staying on the Philadelphia axis and returning the kidnapped. You can't do both...In the end we will find out that either the hostageswill die or we will have to go back on this decision."
