Oğan Cancels Rally, Says No Withdrawal; Kılıçdaroğlu Tweets İnce Invite
The one remaining minor party candidate in the Turkish presidential election, Sinan Oğan, has cancelled a planned rally in Anatalya on 11 May, but has stated that he is not withdrawing from the race. Oğan, candidate of the right-wing Turkish nationalist Ancestral Alliance, is set to meet with his advisors in Anakara.
- Follows on from the withdrawal of Muharrem İnce earlier today. After this, main opposition candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu tweeted an invite to İnce to join the Nation alliance in an effort to oust incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
- Kılıçdaroğlu to İnce: "My call still stands. Let's put aside the old resentments and resentments. We welcome Mr. İnce to Turkey's table. Please come, please..."
- While Oğan's alliance sits on the right of the political spectrum, it is broadly Kemalist and anti-Erdoğan. If his withdrawal can be engineered it could provide a small but meaningful boost to Kılıçdaroğlu's prospect of a first-round win.
- Even though Oğan and İnce's voters may not opt for the Nation alliance candidate, if many of them simply do not vote it would reduce the overall turnout, and potentially make it easier for Kılıçdaroğlu to cross the 50%+1 threshold in the first round.
