Ontario Premier Doug Ford has confirmed that on Wednesday 29 Jan he will formally call an early provincial election for 27 February as he seeks a third consecutive term in office. Ontario is Canada's richest and most populous province, and home to a significant manufacturing base that is reliant on trade with the United States. Ford, hailing from the centre-right Progressive Conservatives (PC), has in response to US President Donald Trump's warning of 25% tariffs on Canadian imports advocated a robust response, saying earlier in January "You can’t let someone hit you over the head with a sledgehammer without hitting them back twice as hard, in my opinion.”
- Informing the media of his intention to call an election more than a year early, Ford said “We need a mandate from the people to fight against Donald Trump’s tariffs. He’s coming against our businesses and communities, and with a strong mandate, we will be able to fight with Donald Trump to make sure we stop the tariffs.”
- Opinion polling shows the PCs as strong favourites to retain a majority in the Legislative Assembly.
- The Ontario election comes during the leadership campaign for the Liberal Party of Canada following PM Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation. The LPC will hold its leadership election in March. There is a strong possibility that the new leader will face a swift confidence vote in the Commons and a snap general election given the gov'ts minority status.
