Opposition Alliance to Announce Joint Presidential Candidate

  • Leaders of the opposition Nation Alliance are expected to announce their presidential candidate after a meeting in Ankara, which is scheduled for 1100 GMT/1400 local time. Last week, IYI (Good) Party leader Meral Aksener broke ranks with the five other opposition parties and said her party would not support main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu as the joint candidate. Cumhurriyet reported that the 5 remaining opposition leaders met without Aksener over the weekend, with Kilicdaroglu set to be announced as the leader today.
  • Increase in rents slowed down considerably in February, while food prices continued to rise significantly, the Turkish central bank said in its monthly inflation assessment report. The moderate trend in energy prices and commodity price developments continued in recent months while producer prices weakened in February due to the significant decrease in energy prices.
  • There are no major data releases scheduled today. Industrial production data and unemployment rate figures take focus later this week.
