Opposition Leader Set To Exit Amid Internal Turmoil, Far-Right Soaring

SPAIN

Opposition centre-right People's Party (PP) leader Pablo Casado looks set to leave his position amidst internal turmoil within his party. Earlier today Casado delivered a speech in parliament calling for the gov't to continue working in "the general public interest", before leaving the chamber immediately alone, in what has been seen as a precursor to his resignation. Casado is set to meet with senior figures from within his party this evening at 2000CET (1400ET, 1900GMT).

  • The PP turmoil comes as President of the Community of Madrid Isabel Diaz Ayuso - one of the most popular figures from within the PP - has blasted party leadership for allegedly seeking evidence of corruption from she and her brother over a contract awarded for face masks during the pandemic.
  • Ayuso and Alberto Nunez Feijoo, President of the Regional Government of Galicia, are seen as favourites to take over from Casado.
  • The PP is also in a vicious cycle of poor opinion polling, with the rise of the far-right VOX weakening Casado's leadership, which in turn is sending more PP voters to VOX. Three of the six opinion polls carried out since 18 Feb have had VOX ahead of the PP.
