Opposition Leader Starmer To Deliver Conference Speech @ 1400BST

UK

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the main opposition centre-left Labour party is set to deliver his keynote address to the annual party conference at 1400BST (0900ET, 1500CET). While a speech from an opposition leader would not usually garner much market interest, Labour hold a wide lead at the top of opinion polls. With the next general election seen as likely to take place in autumn 2024, or even earlier, Labour's policy stances are seen as having a strong possibility of eventually becoming gov't policy. As such, as was the case with shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves' address on 9 Oct, Starmer's speech will be watched for any significant announcements on Labour's potential tax and spending priorities.

  • The latest MRP poll by Survation for The Observer projected Labour winning a sizeable majority. According to the poll, "Labour would win 420 seats – equating to a landslide 190-seat majority. The Tories would take just 149 seats and the Lib Dems 23."
