Opposition Leader Starmer To Tell Business Leaders Era Of Cheap Labour Over

UK

Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer is set to address the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) conference shortly. In his speech, trailed in the media beforehand, Starmer is set to tell business leaders that the UK must end its 'dependence' on cheap labour and low pay, instead investing in training the domestic workforce rather than importing cheaper workers from abroad.

  • Starmer: "“The days when low pay and cheap labor are part of the British way on growth must end...Our common goal must be to help the British economy off its immigration dependency.” These comments come as some industry leaders call for a relaxation in immigration rules to address labour shortages. Both PM Rishi Sunak and Starmer seen as reluctant to use migrant labour to plug the gap.
  • A speech from an opposition leader would not usually garner much attention. However, with opinion polls and betting markets showing that Starmer's centre-left Labour Party is on course to win a majority at the next general election, Starmer's pronouncements on the UK's business environment are set to gain increased scrutiny in the months and years ahead.
