Opposition Parties Approve Name For Alliance, Business Confidence On Tap

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Leaders of seven South African opposition parties agreed on a name for their emerging political alliance - a "multiparty charter for South Africa" rather than the original "moonshot pact". The leaders also agreed that there is a need to unseat the ruling ANC and keep the radical EFF out of the Union Buildings. Furthermore, EWN reported that smaller parties pressured the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) to keep the door open for the Patriotic Alliance (PA) to potentially join the bloc. The second leg of their national convention is today.
  • Local media outlets report that a key electricity amendment bill may only be adopted after the 2024 elections. According to BusinessDay, there is speculation that the delay in advancing the bill by Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe is related to an ideological opposition from some corners within the ANC towards the unbundling of Eskom.
  • South Africa's July SACCI Business Confidence Index will be published at 10:30BST/11:30SAST.
