Opposition Parties Hold National Convention, S. Africa Reports June Retail Sales

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Seven opposition parties are starting their national convention today, seeking to create a "moonshot pact" to mount a challenge to the ruling African National Congress in the 2024 elections. Apart from the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), the conference will be attended by the IFP, FF+, ActionSA, UIM, Isanco and the Spectrum National Party. The FF+ publicly backed IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa as their preferred presidential candidate of the opposition bloc. The Daily Maverick reported that the DA are ready to propose their leader John Steenhuisen for the position of Deputy President responsible for government business.
  • Keith Featherstone, Chief Nuclear Officer at the Koeberg power plant, said that Unit 1 could be back online from November 3, while Unit 2 will be decommissioned on November 7. This would allow South Africa to avoid an overlap in the outages of both units, which would severely amplify pressure to the grid.
  • South African retail sales may have increased by 0.2% Y/Y in June after a 1.4% decline in May, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists. The data will be published at 12:00BST/13:000SAST.
