Opposition Threatens To Take New Party-List Seat Calculation Method To Court

THAILAND

Thailand's main opposition Pheu Thai Party has said it will seek a Constitutional Court ruling on the legality of the new seat-counting method adopted by parliament on Wednesday.

  • After the next general election, the lower house will consist of 400 constituency MPs (up from 350) and 100 party-list MPs (down from 150).
  • Yesterday night, lawmakers voted in support of a party-list MP calculation method which experts say favour smaller political parties.
  • Sources told the Bangkok Post that support for that method was greenlighted by PM Prayuth in a bid to prevent Pheu Thai from winning.
  • The government said if the matter is taken to the Constitutional Court, its implementation will need to be delayed until the ruling is known.
