Reuters reporting that the main opposition left-wing Syriza party will abstain on all votes in parliament until the next legislative election takes place (between Apr-July 2023). According to Syriza leader and former PM Alexis Tsipras, this is in protest over incumbent PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis' gov'ts actions in relation to a phone tapping scandal that has dominated the Greek political agenda in recent months.
- Last week the opposition failed to remove Mitsotakis in a confidence vote, spurring Tsipras to state that "From now on we will abstain from any vote in parliament," while calling on trade unions to take action to force an election.
- Mitsotakis' centre-right New Democracy retains a majority in parliament, meaning Syriza's abstentions will not affect the passage of legislation. The centre-left PASOK, which could prove the kingmaker post-election, has called the Syriza stance 'irresponsible'.
