Panama Canal in Talks with US LNG Producers to Increase Transit: Reuters

LNG

The Panama Canal is in talks with the US LNG producers on how to meet increased demand for crossings as water levels recover from a prolonged drought, the Canal’s administrator Ricaurte Vasquez told Reuters.

  • The Canal is typically used by the USGC exports to move LNG to Asia, but low water levels since last year have cut daily crossings, forcing voyages by alternative routes.
  • In April, LNG transits were just 4.9% of crossings.
  • The canal may need to modify slot allocations to secure more passage for LNG customers, so the administration is working on a survey to be sent to its transport clients to identify their needs.
  • The Panama Canal has proposed building water reservoirs as a solution to mitigate climate change related shortages, though it is waiting for the government grant it the relevant permits.
