Pandor Calls AGOA "Disciplining Whip," Modise Denies Supplying Arms To Russia

SOUTH AFRICA
  • South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor told lawmakers that the country won't change its foreign policy for trade benefits, even if its AGOA status is at stake. According to the chief diplomat, giving in to coercion would open up space for being compelled to follow policies imposed by foreign powers. Still, although AGOA is a "disciplining whip," South Africa wants to be part of it. Pandor's comments came after a bipartisan group of senior US lawmakers asked the White House to reconsider holding the annual AGOA Forum in South Africa due to the country being at risk of losing its status on the back of its stance on the Russo-Ukrainian war. In yesterday's testimony to parliament, Pandor also said that she was not aware of any plans to move the upcoming BRICS summit to another country to avoid having to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • Defence Minister Thandi Modise also spoke in parliament yesterday, insisting that speculation that South Africa may have supplied weapons to Russia was nothing but propaganda. She said that the SADF received a consignment from Russia from an old 2018 order but did not load any weapons onto the sanctioned cargo ship Lady R. Modise played down the need for a judicial inquiry into the matter announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa, arguing that all relevant facts are known.
  • Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, who leads a delegation of regional officials to the US, said that keeping South Africa's AGOA status tops the agenda of talks with senior officials in Washington DC. News24 reported that the trip of the main opposition Democratic Alliance's politician drew the ire of the national government.
