UK
UK: Parliament sit at 10:30GMT today with the first item of business whether the
Brexit legal advice should be investigated as the government being in contempt.
- Yesterday, the Speaker stated there was a case for the government to answer
which would normally signal a debate on the floor would be held on whether the
Privileges Committee should investigate whether there is a contempt or not.
- However, this morning the government have raised a motion that the Privileges
Committee should investigate whether there is a case to answer (rather than
being debated and voted for on the floor).
- The Speaker will decide whether the government's amendment can be voted on. If
so parliament will vote on whether the Privileges Committee can investigate
whether there is a case to answer. If the Speaker does not allow this,
parliament will vote on whether the Privileges Committee can investigate whether
the government was in contempt.
- It is important to note that even if the government's motion is not allowed,
parliament is not voting on whether the government is in contempt but on whether
the Privileges Committee should investigate.
