Parliament Sitting Starts Today, Budget 2023 To Be Tabled On Friday

ASIA

The third sitting of Malaysia's parliament begins today, with all eyes on Budget 2023 and clarification on the timing of the next general election.

  • Most of the sitting will be devoted to the spending plan for the next fiscal year, which will be tabled on Friday. The federal budget will be scrutinised for "election-friendly" fiscal initiatives as pressure is piling on the Prime Minister to dissolve parliament ahead of time.
  • The ruling United Malays National Organisation Party held key meetings to discuss the matter last Friday, before issuing a statement calling for a snap poll by the year-end. The party said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri will seek an audience with the King to discuss possible dates, but it is not yet known when the two will meet.
  • There is a risk that parliament could be dissolved before Budget 2023 is fully passed, which would delay the adoption of the spending plan. Malay Mail cited constitutional exports who said the bill would be void if parliament disbands before it is adopted.
