Pavel Cancels Monday Campaign Plans, CNB Off'l Calls Smoothing Out Rate Path Best Option

  • Novinky.cz called off a presidential debate with Petr Pavel and Andrej Babis after an illness forced the former candidate to cancel his campaign plans for today. The latest batch of opinion polls showed that Pavel remains the frontrunner to win the January 27/28 election run-off, leading Babis by a margin of around 15 percentage points. His advantage in betting market pricing has increased over the weekend, with an 87% chance of his victory baked in.
  • In his weekly column in Mlada Fronda Dnes, CNB Governor Ales Michl pointed to the role a strong Koruna is playing in taming inflation, as it trades at the strongest levels in 14 years. Michl added that Czechia currently has "the highest interest rates in 20 years. We are motivating people to save instead of spending."
  • Meanwhile, CNB Bank Board's Karina Kubelkova argued against further interest-rate increases "in the present situation" to avoid a situation in which they would have to be reversed just months later. She told Hospodarske Noviny that the most effective strategy would be to smooth out the rate path and hold rates higher for longer.
