Pavel & Fiala Discuss Foreign Policy, Environment Minister Appointment

CZECHIA

President-elect Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala held an hour-long meeting today to discuss their future cooperation, with Pavel set to take office on March 9.

  • The two leaders agreed that Fiala will represent Czechia at EU summits, but will be replaced by Pavel at NATO summits. Fiala led Czech delegations to all top-level NATO summits since he became Prime Minister.
  • They also discussed the appointment of constitutional judges and the new Environment Minister. Fiala said that Pavel agreed to tap Petr Hladik right after becoming President. Hladik's candidacy was held off by outgoing President Zeman.
  • Pavel refused to comment on the pension bill tabled in parliament until he takes office. The Chamber of Deputies starts the debate on the proposal to slow the indexation of pensions today.
  • Pavel and Fiala have already met several times and agreed to speak regularly, which suggests that the government may count on smoother cooperation with the Presidential Palace after Pavel's inauguration.
