Pavel Says China Does Not Want Peace In Ukraine

CZECHIA
  • Czechia's President Petr Pavel told Politico that China cannot be trusted as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine as it is benefitting too much from the ongoing war. The former NATO general argued that the conflict allows Beijing to "push Russia to a number of concessions," which includes buying Russian commodities at a discount. Since his presidential campaign, Pavel has been vocal about the need to maintain support for Ukraine's war effort, while signalling an intention to break with his predecessor's policy of rapprochement with China and Russia.
  • In local politics, Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky was re-elected as the leader of the Czech Pirate Party, which holds four seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
  • The CNB will publish changes to its balance sheet in the 10 days through April 20 today at 12:00BST/13:00CEST.
