EU: Per Politico: "After leaders broke off from their plenary session late last
night, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte decried efforts to reduce the
recovery fund. "This negotiation aimed at reducing the effectiveness of the
European response doesn't make sense," he said. "The recovery plan cannot become
a tool to carry on an ideological battle." Conte accused frugal countries of
being "short-sighted" and pursuing "domestic consensus in the immediate" without
realizing that their decision will contribute "to bring down the single market
and the freedom to dream of younger generations." "Grants are needed for a swift
recovery and to strengthen the resilience of countries which face greater
difficulties in having economic growth," Conte added."
