Philadelphia Manufacturing Doesn't Share NY Optimism

  • The Philly Fed manufacturing index was notably weaker than expected in November, falling from -8.7 to -19.4 (cons -6.0).
  • Barring the depths of the pandemic, this is the lowest level since Aug’11 and before that 2009, although if there was one positive takeaway it was the 6-month ahead measure bouncing from -14.9 to -7.1 (but still depressed).
  • It is however, firmly at odds with Tuesday's surprise increase in the Empire survey to +4.5, with other Regional Fed surveys now watched for a better take on potential bias for the broader ISM manufacturing survey.
