Philippines’ Government Approves LNG Import Terminal Project

LNG

The Philippines’ Department of Energy has approved a new LNG import terminal project, marking the country’s seventh such facility as it aims to ramp up gas production according to Reuters.

  • Samat LNG Corp received approval for the small-scale LNG terminal in Mariveles municipality and targets commercial operations by the first half of 2024, with a capacity of 200,000-400,000t/yr of LNG.
  • Three additional terminals are expected to start operations this year.
  • The country will need to rely on LNG imports to fuel gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of more than 3GW, as output from its Malampaya gas field in the South China Sea is expected to continue declining and be depleted by 2027.
