Pita To 'Fight Tooth & Nail' To Keep Opposition MFP Afloat

THAILAND

Reuters reporting comments from main opposition liberal Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limajaroenrat regarding the future for the party amid court rulings that threaten the party's disbanding and its leaders banned from running for office. Pita says that he will 'fight tooth and nail' for the party's survival. He claims that the MFP 'can be a bridge to create a new political consensus in Thailand', and that the party 'seeks to keep Thailand a constitutional monarchy as long as possible'.

  • Two rulings from Thai constitutiuonal court in recent weeks have threatened the future of the progressive youth-oriented party. One rulingdelcared that MFP's pledge to reform Thailand's strict lese-majesty law is itself unlawful, while another gave Pita and other senior MFP figures suspended sentences for holding an unlawful political rally in 2019.
  • Speaking to Reuters, Pita claimed that "Instead of looking at us as a choice of the people and the enemy of the parliament, use us as a bridge [to reform]," Pita: "I feel like it's vicious cycle...We keep going around in circles and we never move forward." Pita claimed that even if the party is dissolved, "They can never take away our legacy," with a slew of future leaders waiting in the wing, adding "They can't never take away our ideology."
  • Pita was blocked from becoming PM following the 2023 legislative elections by the unelected Senate, which refused to back his candidacy despite MFP winning a plurality in the lower house.
