Plans To Expand Copper Smelting, BCCh Meeting Friday

  • As a reminder, Chile's copper commission has lowered its forecasts for prices of the red metal, citing slowing Chinese economic growth, a contraction in Europe and doubts about U.S. expansion. Cochilco, reduced its 2023 projection to $3.85/pound from a $3.90 projection made a quarter ago, the agency wrote in a statement Wednesday.
  • Chile has made its intentions clear to organise an international roadshow for its plans to expand copper smelting in the country, Francisco Dall’Orso, head of public policy at the Mining Ministry, told lawmakers. He, along with Minister Marcela Hernando, outlined the government’s proposal for modernizing existing plants and developing new smelters and refineries to a committee of lower house members. The minister detailed that all six of the nation’s smelters have to be replaced.
