PM Accuses Trade Unions Of Politicking, ANO Seeks Debate On Economy

  • Former Prime Minister Andrej Babis' main opposition ANO party is seeking to ride the wave of a nationwide strike against the government's austerity measures, which paralysed the education sector and some manufacturing companies yesterday. Babis said that he will seek a parliamentary debate on the country's economic situation, which would give his party another opportunity to grill the ruling coalition.
  • Prime Minister Petr Fiala accused union leaders of being concerns with "their own political ambitions" rather than the country's economic situation and pledged that his government "will not retreat". Separately, Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura spoke in a similar vein, telling Denik N that the unions are more conciliatory behind the closed doors and change their rhetoric when the cameras are on.
  • Speaking to Corriere della Sera during his ongoing visit to Italy, President Petr Pavel called for continued Western support for Ukraine's war effort. Pavel suggested that anything less than giving Ukraine "everything it needs for its task of restoring sovereignty and control over its borders" would be a failure.
