PM Bennett To Meet Putin Next Week

ISRAEL

Office of the Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett releases statement confirming that Bennett will travel to Sochi, Russia next week (22 October) for his first in-person talks with President Vladimir Putin.

  • The PMO release states that "The two will discuss a series of diplomatic, security and economic issues involving both countries, as well as important regional matters, primarily Iran's nuclear program."
  • Bennett remains the most vocal regional voice in opposition to the Iran nuclear deal, while Russia remains a signatory to the agreement. Talks in Vienna between Iran and the JCPoA signatories (China, France, Germany, Russia, UK) have yet to resume following the inauguration of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
  • The two are also likely to discuss the situation in Syria. Putin and Bennett's predecessor Benjamin Netanyahu held numerous meetings over the years in an effort to avoid any conflict between Israel and Russia in Syria.
