PM Cancels India Trip

UK

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has cancelled his long-planned trip to India following a surge in COVID-19 cases in the south Asian nation.

  • A spokesman for No.10 said that "In the light of the current coronavirus situation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not be able to travel to India next week." Also stated that Johnson and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi "will speak later this month to agree and launch their ambitious plans for the future partnership between the UK and India. They will remain in regular contact beyond this, and look forward to meeting in person later this year."
  • The UK gov't had been keen for the trip to go ahead, given the PM's espousal of the idea of a 'global Britian', able to make trade deals with nations on a bilateral basis and acting as the world's power broker following the UK's exit from the EU.
