Speaking ahead of the special European Council summit in Brussels, PM Robert Golob says that Slovenia will need to raise its defence spending to 2% of GDP before 2030. N1 reports Golob's comments: "Unfortunately, we live in a world that demands an increase. It is too early to talk about what exactly this trajectory will be until 2030. Once we have the scenario finally prepared, we will inform the Slovenian public and parliament about it. All of this will happen before the NATO summit, where these expenditures will also be confirmed,"
- Slovenia sits as one of the laggards within NATO when it comes to defence spending, with its 2024 total coming in equal to 1.29% of GDP.
- Golob's comments represent a sharp about-face from a month ago when he declared that the gov't was not considering altering the 2% of GDP by 2030 plan. ENR reported, "[Golob] added that the government is currently satisfied with what is set in the budgets for this year and next year, as it is on the way to achieving the goal set for 2030. According to the Ministry of Defense’s data from the end of last year, defense spending for 2025 is estimated at 1.53 percent of GDP, and for 2026 at 1.6 percent of GDP."
- Slovenia's budget deficit stood at 1.2% of GDP in 2024. Golob's commitment today will either see the deficit widen as defence spending is ramped up, or require spending cuts elsewhere/tax hikes to fund if the gov't seeks to maintain a narrow deficit.
