PM Ismail Sabri's BN Loses Big In Malaysia's General Election, Coalition Talks Begin

ASIA

The opposition Pakatan Harapan alliance emerged as the best performer but it is Perikatan Nasional's Muhyiddin Yassin who is the frontrunner to become Malaysia's Prime Minister after a bitterly fought general election, which resulted in the nation's first hung parliament. Two seats remain undeclared but they are unlikely to tip the overall balance.

  • While the opposition bloc led by Anwar Ibrahim is poised to secure the largest share of seats, it will reduce its presence in parliament by 18 lawmakers. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Muhyiddin's Perikatan Nasional coalition performed much better than expected and will more than double its parliamentary representation.
  • The ruling Barisan Nasional alliance led by caretaker Prime Minister Ismail Sabri suffered a humiliating defeat, with its number of MPs set to be cut in half. The dismal performance of the bloc led by Malaysia's largest political party UMNO will exacerbate well documented internal tensions, with some senior members calling on BN leader Zahid to resign.
  • The inconclusive outcome of the election triggers coalition talks, with Perikatan Nasional's Muhyiddin Yassin seen as the most likely candidate for Prime Minister. Muhyiddin declared that he has the support of two regional political blocks from Borneo (GRS and GPS), as well as several independents.
  • Pakatan Harapan's Anwar has also claimed that he has the numbers to form the next government, while refusing to name potential coalition partners. Sources told Malaysiakini that PH and BN representatives are expected to hold talks Monday morning, even as Anwar dismissed rumours of his imminent meeting with Zahid.
  • The leaders of the main political groups have been asked to notify the Dewan Rakyat speaker about their agreed coalitions by 2pm Monday, by which time there should be more clarity on the possible composition of the next government. If any of the leaders proves that he has the support of more than 112 MPs, he could be named Prime Minister as soon as Monday evening.
