PM Kishida Considering Summit w/Biden Around Time Of UNGA-Jiji

Japan's Jiji News reporting that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is considering seeking a summit with US President Joe Biden around the time of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City (starting 13 Sep).

  • Comes as Japan, the US, and South Korea issue warning to Pyongyang regarding the prospect of another nuclear test raises tensions in northeast Asia. Last week, national security heads from each country met in Hawaii to discuss potential joint actions in the event North Korea carries out a seventh nuclear test, the first since Sep 2017.
  • Moreover, on 2 September, US Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emmanuel (formerly President Barack Obama's Chief of Staff), stated in a speech in Tokyo that the Japanese-US alliance has moved from an era of 'protection' in Asia to one of 'projection' into the Indo-Pacific.
  • Kishida currently struggling with declining approval ratings, with revelations about several Cabinet ministers links to the controversial Unification Church spurring a fall in support.
