PM Kishida's Cabinet Comes Into Office With 55% Approval Rating

JAPAN

Kyodo News poll shows the Cabinet of new Prime Minister Fumio Kishida coming into office with 55.7% approval ratings, while its disapproval rating stood at 23.7%. The 55% approval rating compares unfavourably with that of former PM Yoshihide Suga, whose Cabinet came into office in 2020 with an approval rating of 66.4%.

  • Respondents were split down the middle on their views of Kishida's economic policies, with 46% reporting that they were hopeful of his policies and 46% saying they were not hopeful.
  • 69% of respondents stated that there should be a change from the policies of former prime ministers Shinzo Abe and Yoshihide Suga.
  • While Kishida hails from the liberal Kochikai faction of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), his policy stance has shifted to the right more in line with the mainstream of his party, with support for a greater role for the Japanese military and a hard-line stance on China.
