PM Vows "Largest Aid For Farmers In History," Agriculture Min Says Measures Will Cost PLN10bn

POLAND

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that the Cabinet at an extraordinary meeting today adopted several directives and agreed on a draft bill intended to help farmers, with support measures amounting to the "largest aid for farmers in history" in multiple aspects.

  • Morawiecki said that measures will be funded from Poland's budget as aid proposed by the European Commission is "too late, too little, a drop in the ocean of needs." Still, some of the measures proposed by his government need the Commission's approval.
  • Agriculture Minister Robert Telis specified that the cost of new aid measures amounts to PLN10bn, which has been agreed with farmers' labour unions. This exceeds the PLN5bn figure floated by Deputy Finance Minister earlier this week.
  • The government is making efforts at damage control after the influx of cheap Ukrainian grain into Polish markets resulted in the protests of local farmers, with just a few months left to the next parliamentary election.
