PMQs Dominated By Inflation Arguments

In an extreme rarity, the leaders' questions in PMQs were dominated by discussions on inflation. Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner questioned PM Boris Johnson on why the gov't is set to maintain the charging of VAT on energy bills, while the SNP also brought up the 'cost of living crisis' engendered by rising energy, fuel and food costs.

  • While the questions and answers themselves (as is often the case in PMQs) generated more heat than light, the fact that inflation and cost of living concerns are dominating political discourse in the country, above other major topics such as COVID, Brexit, or foreign policy threats, is likely to mean intense political focus on the Bank of England's actions and pronouncements in the coming months.
