Poland Hopeful To Unblock EU Recovery Funds, Morawiecki Departs For V4 Summit

POLAND
  • The top brass of the ruling Law and Justice party will convene this afternoon, PAP newswire reports. On the agenda are regional matters and talks with the EU on the release of recovery funds. The party suffered an unexpected blow earlier this week, losing control over a regional legislature in Silesia following the defection of several local lawmakers.
  • Poland's Deputy Finance Minister Artur Sobon told Radio Zet that Law and Justice won't be able to win the 2023 parliamentary election if it fails to secure access to the EU recovery funds. Polish PM Morawiecki struck a similar note, expressing his conviction that the funds will eventually be unblocked. Separately, FinMin Rzeczkowska told PAP that Warsaw is not looking to blackmail the European Commission by vetoing its key proposals.
  • Morawiecki is heading for a potentially contentious V4 summit today, with Budapest at odds with regional partners on issues including the war in Ukraine. The Premier said he would try to convince Hungary's Viktor Orban to approve Finland's accession to NATO, while Deputy Foreign Minister Przydacz said Poland would seek closer convergence in foreign and defence policy.
  • Defence Minister Blaszczak tweeted last night that told his German counterpart that Berlin's Patriot air defence systems offered to Poland should be donated to Ukraine and located near its Western border. Blaszczak's proposal is unlikely to come to fruition, given that the systems need to be operated by German troops.
