POLAND: Poland Signs Security Agreement With Ukraine, Duda Attends NATO Summit

POLAND
  • PM Donald Tusk and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a bilateral agreement on security cooperation. Although Poland was only the 21st country to conclude such a pact with Kyiv, the document included some unusual clauses. Among others, a "Ukrainian Legion" composed of volunteers will be formed and trained on Poland's territory. Furthermore, the two sides agreed to continue talks on the "legitimacy and feasibility" of the idea that Poland's military could potentially intercept missiles and drones flying through the Ukrainian airspace. While the clause lays the groundwork for a potential escalation of direct military support for Ukraine, the bar for any such interventions has been set fairly high already at this early stage, with the document noting that hostile projectiles would have to be heading towards the Polish territory, while any such interceptions would be consulted with allies. Ex-Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said this morning that Poland has the necessary technology and its military is ready to conduct such operations, but it would require the approval of all NATO member states.
  • President Andrzej Duda, Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski have arrived in Washington DC for the NATO summit. Before his departure, Duda declared that his stance on national security matters is fully aligned with the government's, despite recent tensions over ambassadorial nominations and other issues.
