MNI BRIEF: Inflation Surge Rattles Eurozone Finance Ministers

(MNI) Brussels

Eurozone finance ministers are becoming more worried that the current spike in inflation will prove to be persistent following the surge in energy prices, a senior EU official told reporters.

"There is a relevant discussion about what part of the developments we are seeing are likely to be more persistent, or even permanent," the official said.

A meeting in Luxembourg on Oct. 4 will be the first opportunity for the finance ministers to discuss the recent rapid rise in gas and oil prices with ECB President Christine Lagarde. It is also being seen as an opportunity for the Slovenian EU presidency to "take the temperature" on the issue ahead of the EU's October summit, where the response to recent energy developments will be an important item on the leaders' agenda.
