Poll Finds US Voters Support JCPOA Deal With Iran

SECURITY

A poll cited by the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft has found that 78% of voters believe that Washington should pursue a diplomatic solution to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

  • RS: "Notably, the survey showed that a slim majority (56 percent) of Republicans would support a “new agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program,” even if that accord was based on the original deal [negotiated by the Obama administration]."
  • RS: "If Iran does manage to develop a nuclear weapon, respondents said overwhelmingly that they would primarily blame either Biden or former President Donald Trump. Responses fell along partisan lines, with 62 percent of Democrats blaming Trump and 61 percent of Republicans putting the responsibility on Biden’s shoulders."
  • The report comes with the caveat that the Quincy Institute generally advocates a non-interventionist US foreign policy position, but the report suggests that there might be flexibility for the Biden administration to negotiate a JCPOA deal with Iran without fearing the same level of domestic blowback when the previous round of talks collapsed in April.
