Poll Gives CDU Widest Lead Since April As Laschet Recovery Continues

GERMANY

The latest federal-level poll from INSA gives the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) a 6-point lead over the environmentalist Greens. This is the widest lead the party of Chancellor Angela Merkel has held over the Greens since 19 April, the day North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President and Merkel's policy successor Armin Laschet was selected as the centre-right Union parties' candidate for chancellor.

  • INSA/BILD: CDU/CSU: 26.5% (+0.5), Green: 20.5% (-0.5), SPD: 15.5% (-1.5), FDP: 13.5% (+1.5), AfD: 11% (-1), Die Linke: 7% (+1). Fieldwork: 4-7 June. Chgs w/31 May-4 June. 2,015 respondents.
  • The recent turnaround in the CDU's polls combined with the strong result for the party in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt on 6 June (see 1000BST bullet) will provide some notable relief for the embattled chancellor candidate Laschet.
  • In the aftermath of the Saxony-Anhalt vote, Morgan Stanley reaffirmed its base case scenario following the election of a Laschet-led CDU/CSU-Green coalition gov't.
