Poll Points To Minority Government Following October Election

NEW ZEALAND

The April poll from Roy Morgan is showing that currently the NZ poll is too close to call with the centre-right National/Act NZ coalition on 44.5% and Labour/Greens on 42% suggesting that neither groupings will win a majority in the October election at this point. The nationalist Maori Party continue to be in the position to decide the next government.

  • The Nationals were unchanged on 32% while Act NZ fell 0.5pp to 12.5%. Backing for the incumbent Labour Party fell 3pp to 30% while support for their coalition partner the Greens rose 1.5pp to 12%. The Maori Party rose 2.5pp to 4.5% and a current Labour minister has just defected to the party. NZ First rose 1.5pp to 4.5%.
  • Confidence in the current government fell 6pts to 80, its lowest since former PM Ardern resigned in January. 55% said that NZ was “heading in the wrong direction”.
