Poll Shows Chileans Increasingly Positive On Incoming President Boric

CHILE

Latest polling from Chile shows respondents increasingly positive towards the prospects of incoming president Gabriel Boric. The leftist former student activist who won the December 2021 presidential election, is set to be sworn into office on 11 March.

  • Cadem poll: 'How do you think Chile will fare under the new government of Gabriel Boric?': Well: 53% (+7), Fairly: 29% (-4), Badly: 13% (-3), Don't know: 5%. (+/- vs. 5-7 January). Fieldwork: 12-14 January 2022. Sample size: 704
  • Given the extremely polarised nature of the presidential election campaign, and the general febrile political environment in Chile in recent years, there was the prospect that the election could have unleashed a wave of protest or even civil unrest.
  • However, this has been avoided and so far and with polling like this it seems Boric has succeeded (so far) in providing a unifying force. It remains to be seen whether this will be maintained once he takes office.
