POWER: Europe Adds 6.4GW in 1H24, Total Capacity Reaches 278GW

POWER

Europe added 6.4GW of Wind in 1H24, with 5.3GW being onshore and the remaining offshore, however, further improvements are needed in the auction design, with grid bottlenecks delaying projects, WindEurope said.

  • German led the way with 1.7GW installed, following by France and Spain at 1.2GW and 876MW, respectively,
  • Europe’s wind capacity is now at 278GW - 242GW being onshore and 35GW being offshore.
  • Wind turbine orders are up by 11% the year for all of Europe and 33% for the EU-27.
  • The region made €15.4bn of FIDs in new wind farms in H1 2024 – a drop of 30% of the total FIDs taken in 2023. Only four FIDs have been made so far this year.
  • Current trends and the pipeline of projects and auctions now point to the EU having 350GW of wind by 2030 – 296GW onshore and 54GW offshore.
  • Additionally, Governments must implement the new EU rules, improve auctions for investments, act on grids per the EU’s plan, and support the supply chain and ports, according to WindEurope.
