Germany to Launch First Hydrogen-Ready Gas Tender in Early-2025

Germany plans to launch the first tender for new hydrogen-ready power plants in early 2025, the economy ministry said in a consultation paper.

  • The government plans to tender a total of 2.5GW of capacity in early 2025, 2.5GW in 2026 and 2GW in 2027.
  • Germany plans tenders for 5GW of hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plant. The plants have to switch to hydrogen-fired generation after a maximum of eight years following the commissioning.
  • The government also plans to tender 500MW of hydrogen-powered plants and 500MW of energy storage.
  • Separately, the country will tender 5GW of gas-fired power plant to ensure security of supply, which will be tendered separately.
