POWER: Italian Hydro Stocks Fall Below 5-Year Normal

POWER

Italian hydropower reserves decreased by 0.08TWh to 3.43Twh as of the end of week 33, switching to a deficit to the five-year average for the first time eight weeks, Entso-E data showed.

  • Reserves stood 0.04TWh below the five-year average, compared with a surplus of 0.02TWh the week before.
  • Stocks also widened the deficit to 2023 levels to 0.05TWh, from 0.01TWh a week prior.
  • Run of river generation last week declined by 390MW to 4.36GW. Output from pumped storage edged down by 112MW to 609MW. Output from reservoirs declined y 176MW to 785MW.
  • Gas-fired generation in Italy decreased by 249MW last week to 12.61GW.
  • Solar PV output last week declined by 532MW to 4.39GW. Wind output edged lower by 79MW on the week to 954MW.
  • Power demand in Italy last week decreased to 30.39GW, down from 34.12GW the week before.
  • Earlier this month, France’s RTE announced to introduce cross-border limitations to increase between 29 July and 8 September when the value of the exports on its eastern border exceeds 8GW but may also lower flows with total exports below the 8GW threshold. This could increase domestic hydropower demand in Italy.
  • Looking forward, the latest 6-10 day ECMWF weather forecast suggested mean temperatures in Rome this week will remain well above the seasonal normal, with max temperatures rising to 32C this week.
  • The latest weather forecast for Torino – close to Italy’s hydro-intensive region – is suggesting precipitation to total 7.48mm this week, compared with the 30-year normal of 2.77mm.
