POWER: UK Urged to Roll Out SMRs Versus Large Nuclear

POWER

UK GE-Hitchachi director Andrew Champ has recommended that the government build SMRs over large nuclear plants as they are cheaper, less risky and “offered the best route” to expand domestic capacity, Champ said, cited by Telegraph.

  • Many investors have “scars” from budget overruns and delays with bigger nuclear projects and view them as too risky, Champ added.
  • GE-Hitachi hopes to build a fleet of at least 20 SMRs in the UK, according to Champ.
  • Assuming that SMRs have at least 300MW of capacity – that would equal 6GW of additional nuclear.
  • Additionally, GE believes that the UK’s 24GW target of nuclear capacity is too conservative partly due to the huge growth in demand from data centres.
  • The UK’s Hinkley Point C in Somerset costs increased to £46bn – inflation included- from £20bn.
