President AMLO Remarks Following Hurricane Otis

  • There has been more focus on president AMLO’s daily press conference on Thursday following the devastating impact of Hurricane Otis which made landfall late Tuesday and through the early hours of Wednesday morning. According to a disaster modeler with Enki Research, in addition to the human toll, Acapulco likely suffered an economic impact of $10-15 billion. It is likely there will be additional losses due to the region’s high season for tourism being December to March.
  • One official said there have been 27 deaths so far, with a further four remaining unaccounted for. Furthermore, 80% of hotels in the hurricane zone have been impacted. President AMLO explained that Guerrero communications have not been fully re-established, although TELMEX have restored the telecom network in Acapulco.
  • The President highlighted that corn crops have been affected and that the government will provide assistance for agriculture producers. Additionally, the administration are to schedule meetings with businessmen to discuss a rehabilitation plan.
