President Biden To Deliver Remarks In Baltimore Friday

US

President Biden will travel to Baltimore, Maryland on Friday, April 5 to deliver remarks at the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Headquarters, near the site of collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge.

  • President Biden pledged shortly after the bridge collapse that the federal government would covered the cost of rebuilding the bridge, likely to total upward of USD$1 billion and require supplemental funding approval from Congress.
  • Jennifer Jacobs at Bloomberg reports on X: "Biden’s advisers have called major employers in Baltimore area to encourage them to retain jobs despite the bridge collapse... Jeff Zients, Lael Brainard, other aides have phoned companies including Amazon, Home Depot, as bridge disaster poses a fresh challenge for Biden, who is battling voter skepticism of his economic stewardship as he vies for 2nd term."
  • Visiting the bridge site so soon after disaster may mitigate Biden similar political fallout to that he suffered after failing to visit East Palestine, Ohio for a year after a major train derailment.
  • CNN noted this week, that despite some concerns that the disaster could create new supply chain snarls in the automotive sector: "The collapse will indeed have some economic impact, but it will likely be limited. Baltimore’s regional economy has a lot going for it such as low unemployment and low inflation."
