President Petro Criticises Congress Over Reform Delays

  • In an interview with Cambio over the weekend, President Petro criticised Congress for impeding his reforms and also denied that he wanted to change the constitution to allow himself to be re-elected, saying he wasn’t interested in that. On Congress, he expressed his frustration that the government’s reform agenda, which he said had been expressed by the popular vote, faces delay after delay in Congress.
  • Nonetheless, the government’s proposed pension reform bill has made some progress recently after the labour committee of the lower house of Congress passed its approval late last month. To recap, the bill will now need a final approval in the lower house, followed by a vote to reconcile any differences between the two chambers of Congress.
  • Data wise, the domestic calendar is clear today, with focus turning to May manufacturing PMI data and April exports figures, both due tomorrow.
