President Xi-'Momentum Of Global Economic Recovery Is Insufficient'

CHINA

Wires carrying comments from Chinese President Xi Jinping who has just delivered keynote speech at the opening ceremony of China International Import Expo.

  • President Xi: "China will continue to open up, to pursue a win-win cooperation.".
  • Xi: "The momentum of the global economic recovery is still insufficient."
  • Xi: "China will strengthen links between domestic and international markets and promote the building of an open world economy". "China will encourage all countries and parties to share opportunities for deepening international cooperation and promoting international macroeconomic policy coordination".
  • Xi: "China will expand high-quality product imports, accelerate the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, and actively push for participation in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA)."
  • CPTPP is the agreement that rose from the ashes of the TPP, which had included the United States but only for a short period as then-President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the deal.
  • China's involvement in CPTPP remains an unlikely prospect, given that the US can force Mexico and/or Canada to vote against China's CPTPP application as part of the North American USMCA trade deal.
