Presidential Election Comes Down To The Wire

SLOVAKIA

The Slovakian presidential election is set to go down to the wire, with the final opinion polling ahead of the 6 April second round run-off showing former PM Peter Pellegrini and former Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok level-pegging. Of the five polls carried out between the first round election on 23 March and the run-off, three show Korcok leading while two show Pellegrini ahead. Four are within the margin of error, making them essentially a dead-heat, with only the 2 April SCIO poll showing Korcok holding a more sizeable 55%-45% lead.

  • There is notable focus on the eleciton not just in Slovakia, but in Brussels and Kyiv. Pellegrini leads the centre-left Hlas-SD that currently sits as part of PM Robert Fico's governing coalition, while Korcok is backed by a number of pro-EU opposition parties.
  • The stance and policies of Fico have led to a backlash from domestic critics who oppose his plans tooverhaul the public broadcaster or hisattitude towards the war in Ukraine(viewed as being too cosy with Russia). The EU will also be wary of Fico turning Slovakia into another Hungary in terms of threat to EU rule of law standards and blocking unanimous action regarding the war in Ukraine.
  • A win for Korcok could be viewed as a repudition of Fico's policies. While the Slovakian presidency does not afford significant powers, but nevertheless can act as a prominent vocal opponent to the PM if they so wish, becoming something of a 'flag bearer' for the opposition.
