Presidential Election Polls Narrowing, BanRep Minutes

COLOMBIA
  • The gap between front-running Presidential candidate Gustavo Petro and his main rival appears to be narrowing according to two new polls published over the weekend.
  • A survey conducted by the National Consulting Center and published by Semana magazine on Saturday, suggests a tightening race between Petro and his main rival, conservative candidate Federico “Fico” Gutierrez.
    • In similar vein, results from another study by Guarumo S.A.S. and Ecoanalitica Medicion y Conceptos Economicos S.A.S., published in El Tiempo newspaper on Sunday, echoed the convergence of the polling data.
  • BanRep minutes are scheduled for 2300BST/1800ET – As a reminder the central bank hiked rates by 100bps last week, below the consensus forecast for bolder action.
  • Starting today Colombia’s central bank will return to the same liquidity mechanisms that it had in place before March 2020, it said in a statement.
    • Measures include no longer carrying out expansion operations using corporate bonds and will also suspend those operations for 9 months and 1 year with government debt. (BBG)
